We find ourselves working in a rather unique context—on the threshold between built environment and countryside—where the rural characteristics of the surrounding territory remain strongly present. We believe the project must preserve these qualities to mitigate the impact of the built environment on the landscape as effectively as possible.
The 15-meter elevation difference across the site—ranging from approximately 225 meters above sea level at the southeast high point to 210 meters at the northwest low point—could pose an additional challenge in the design of the school complex. However, in line with principles of environmental sustainability and appropriate landscape integration, our proposal aims to transform this elevation change into an opportunity rather than an obstacle.
The Green Filter – Parco Sant’Anna
Our design seeks to maintain the site's green perception as intact as possible. For this reason, we have chosen to concentrate the built structures in the central portion of the site, thereby creating a green perimeter that follows the natural slope, preserves its character, and simultaneously acts as a green buffer between the school buildings and the vehicular roads. This green filter—envisioned under the new name Parco Sant’Anna—also becomes an opportunity to host a variety of activities, ensuring the site remains lively and active even outside school hours. It becomes a place for collective gathering, aimed at strengthening the social fabric promoted by the latest educational directives.
Piazza Sant’Anna
The layout of the buildings also defines a second open space, with a more architectural vocation, serving as the core of the school complex—a public space directly connected to the four surrounding buildings. Conceived as the new Piazza Sant’Anna, this square will serve as the setting for school performances but will also be suitable for city-wide events, thanks to its easy accessibility, its level topography, and the directly connected amenities such as the multipurpose hall, the library, and the gymnasium.
