The commitment with which this Municipal Administration is completing the virtuous project of the back-dune paths serves as an essential foundation for our work, guiding our dialogue and efforts to become a natural extension of these objectives.
Our design choice, born from this context, is undoubtedly bold yet highly stimulating: the construction of the new facility on stilts.
Why stilts?
The human impact on the coastline over the years has altered the natural dune system, which serves as a protective barrier against marine intrusion and supports biodiversity. This system is crucial for protecting the coastal pine forests and is a valuable aesthetic element of the territory.
The decision to elevate the new facility above the ground stems from these considerations. It is primarily an environmental strategy aimed at preserving and enhancing the natural sedimentation process that reforms dunes—processes disrupted over time by traditional beach facility construction.
While fully complying with the complete demolition of existing structures as required by the competition brief, our design is based on the principle of preserving almost entirely the current planimetric and volumetric configuration of the area, including the natural dune elevations formed over time.
The building will feature a service block on its northern side—solid and opaque—while the entire southern facade will be defined by transparency, which is its core value. This decision stems from a contextual analysis and a strong desire to offer the facility a dual frontage. The beach facility is no longer conceived as the terminal element of the sea-beach-facility system but as part of a more complex network extending from the sea to the Pialassa lagoon, with the facility as a central component.
With this project, we aim to make the beach visible from the existing access path that crosses the pine forest, creating a necessary visual continuity to enhance the dialogue between the two fronts: the sea side and the pine forest side.
